The new Moto G has arrived. Motorola aims to deliver a quality overall smartphone for the masses at a good price with the third gen. On paper, the new Moto G may hardly seem like an upgrade. However, Motorola has incorporated some subtle changes which might give a bang for the buck for most average smartphone use.
Moto G (3rd Gen) is available in two options- 16GB internal memory with 2GB RAM and 8GB internal memory with 1GB at Rs 11,999 and Rs 12,999 respectively.
Motorola upgraded and installed better camera, bigger battery, 4G support and has made it water-resistant. While the expectation might have been high from the third gen, Motorola seems to have hit the right spots with the upgraded new Moto G.
Motorola is clearly not interested in participating in the ‘spec sheet vs price’ flash sale contest. Instead, the new Moto G aims to deliver a better overall experience. But does it manage to impress? Here is our first impressions of the 16GB ROM/ 2GB RAM version.

Design: Moto G (3rd Gen) shares the same form factor and looks similar to the earlier version. The glossy plastic rear cover of Moto G (2nd Gen) is now replaced with a textured matte back cover. This adds extra grip. The front is plain and has two speaker bars like the earlier Moto G. The sides sport a brushed metal look and the rear camera area is more prominent and makes the phone look premium. The new Moto G is a bit lighter and feels more compact in the hand. The build quality is good. Though the device is water-resistant, the back cover can be removed to access the SIM and microSD card slots.
Display: The display features of both the second and third generation Moto G is same. The new version also sports a 5-inch 720p HD display. Outdoor visibility should not be an issue at high brightness levels. The viewing angles are good. Though the quality is good, many users would have expected the Moto G (3rdGen) to come with a bigger display.
Performance: Like the earlier Moto G, the new version also aims to cater to the needs of masses than the power users. However, with the 1.4 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 CPU, users can expect the device to perform better than the second gen Moto G which was powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU. The device is equipped to handle the daily performance demands of average users. For better multitasking, buyers can also choose 16GB version which comes with 2GB RAM for Rs 1,000 more. The device runs stock Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system.
Camera: Motorola has paid special attention in this department. The Moto G (3rd Gen) sports a 13MP rear camera with dual tone LED Flash and a 5MP front camera. It can record 1080p videos along with 720p SloMo videos from both the cameras. The Focus Ring now comes with exposure control. It comes with Quick Capture, which enables users to launch and swap between the two cameras by twisting the wrist twice. The camera is fast.
Battery: The new Moto G is powered by a 2,470 mAh battery and is expected to last longer than the earlier Moto G.
Connectivity: It sports two micro SIM card slots with support for 4G. It also has a microSD card slot which supports up to 32GB external memory.
Special mention: This is the only smartphone in this price range which is water-resistant. You cannot swim with your new Moto G, however, you need not worry about rains or accidental spills. Moto G (3rd Gen) has IPX7 certification. This means it is dust proof and is immersible in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes. However, be sure to lock the rear cover properly.
